i have been working on my debut novel for the better part of three years. im in the long haul to finish it within the next couple of months and i hope to be ready to publish it later this year.

the caveat is that despite being a fictional high fantasy novel, its main character is from a culture that was eradicted (almost) by the ruling class.

the main characters history is based off of my own experiences as well as stories of what my family and ancestors went through.

im worried it will be received poorly and make me look like an asshole clout chaser trying to capitalize on real-life suffering. im especially concerned since genocide has been a main topic in the publics collective consciousness for the past several months (as it should be)

would i be the asshole for going through with the publication anyway?

U.S. Copyright Office Presses 'Pause' on DMCA Exemption for Video Games

When we think of a library, we picture never-ending shelves of books; the world's knowledge available to us at the touch of a finger. But nowadays, it's not just physical records that libraries collect. Many now lend video games to their members, providing their local communities with entertainment while helping preserve the software for future generations.

The recent decision by the U.S. Copyright Office (USCO) to reject an exemption to the DMCA for video games in libraries' collections has put that practice into question. The decision prevents video games from being accessed remotely by researchers. While some in the games industry view this ruling as a win for rights holders, others see it as a major setback for arts research, especially compared to researchers in other fields with "routine and regular access" to digital archives.

What Is The DMCA?

Passed in 1998, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) brought the U.S. in line with treaties of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), updating copyright law for the digital age. Section 1201 of the DMCA criminalizes the "circumvention of copyright protection systems" that prevent unauthorized access to copyrighted works, such as reading encrypted optical discs or removing copy restrictions from electronic documents.

Exemptions are made for some uses, including for nonprofit libraries, archives and educational institutions (section 1201(d)), as long as a "good faith" determination is made. Libraries are permitted to create digital copies of obsolete works for purpose of preservation, but those works must not be commercially available for a "reasonable price" and can only be accessed onsite.

The Petition

The Video Game History Foundation (VGHF) has been working with the Software Preservation Network (SPN) since 2021 on a petition to the U.S. Copyright Office, proposing that the DMCA digital copying exemption be expanded to allow access to games outside of the physical premises of an institution. A study published by the VGHF in July 2023 estimated that 87% of video games released in the US before 2010 are "critically endangered" and inaccessible, being out of print in either physical or digital form. Options to play classic games are limited as many require vintage hardware or are no longer available on a digital storefront, potentially pushing consumers and researchers towards piracy as the most convenient means of access.

The petition's main argument is framed from the perspective of fair use: works kept by archives and collections are exempt from copyright infringement laws if they are used for purposes such as research or teaching. To enable this, the SPN proposed a system of user vetting and copyright notices, allowing institutions to restrict access only to users who submit a research request detailing the scope of their project and providing notices to remind them that their access is subject to copyright law.

The requirement of having to request specific access ensures that games are being used for research purposes, with the SPN citing "academic literacy" as a way of filtering out users planning to access them for entertainment. The USCO already allows institutions to lend other forms of media remotely, and the SPN argued that the DMCA's stringent rules around distribution of software programs places impediments on video game scholarship that are not present in other disciplines.

Arguments Against

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA), a trade association representing the U.S. video game industry, opposed the SPN petition, stating that the exemption would leave rights owners insufficiently protected and that the market for classic video games would be damaged. The SPN's proposed method of fair use vetting was dismissed by the ESA as "illusory", arguing that this was not enough justification for the breadth of use they would enable. It would be too difficult for libraries to supervise multiple users remotely accessing games, thus enabling usage for entertainment purposes.

Furthermore, the ESA contended that the market for classic video games is "vibrant and growing", citing the number of titles currently available on digital storefronts such as the Xbox Game Pass, not to mention frequent re-releases of individual titles on modern systems. That a game is "out of print" does not mean it is lost forever, only that the copyright owner decided not to put it on the market. Allowing widespread remote access to classic games would present a serious risk to the market and prevent copyright owners from enforcing their copyrights.

The USCO Ruling

The USCO observed that, for a fair use exemption, access to the games would have to be guarded against recreational use by containing "appropriately tailored restrictions". The view taken by the ESA on the SPN's proposed restrictions was echoed by the USCO, which ruled that they were not specific enough to prevent market harm and that the SPN had not met the burden of showing that allowing simultaneous remote access by multiple users was likely to be fair.

Regarding the claims of market damage put forth by the ESA, the USCO acknowledged the evidence presented of a "substantial market" for classic video games, and the SPN's concession that the industry has made a greater effort in recent years to reissue older games. Considering these arguments, the Register ultimately rejected the petition, but recommended clarifying the wording used in the DMCA to reflect that a computer program may be accessed by as many individuals as the institution owns copies.

What Does This Mean?

As a newer form of digital media, U.S. law has yet to settle on a definitive classification of what copyrights arise from a video game. A common view is for games to be treated as computer software and for the source code to be considered a literary work. However, unlike "traditional" literary works such as books or newspapers, the interactive nature of a video game makes regulating access to it more complicated.

Games are often limited to their corresponding hardware, potentially leading to research costs going up as researchers may be forced to travel long distances or somehow purchase a retro console for themselves; not to mention potential consideration of extra-legal methods. Researchers are pushed into focusing on works that are easy to access rather than those they have a true interest in studying. Teaching is also affected: academics cannot assign their students games with historical or technological significance if they may not be able to access them (for example,  the original Metroid Prime (2002), noted for its female protagonist and being the first game in the series to use 3D graphics, is only available on the GameCube). This curtails the growth of video game studies, introducing obstacles to a field with deepening cultural impact and technological advancement.

In their submission to the USCO, the SPN compared the rise of video games to the film industry, highlighting the creation of the National Film Preservation Board in 1988 as a way of recognizing that films are a part of cultural heritage, worthy of academic preservation and study. Whether games will ever reach that status remains uncertain: they make up a large part of our cultural and entertainment landscape today and it's clear that they are here to stay, but only time will tell whether the USCO's attitudes change.

Disambiguating the two Tradwives

There has been a bit of... "news"... in progressive political spheres the past few months about the tradwife lifestyle. Specifically, about conservative women who dove into - or at least professed to dive into - that lifestyle/aesthetic, and it later turned out that their partners were simply using that as a way to abuse them. Lets talk about that.

This is about how "tradwife" as a sociopolitical/religious ideology relates to "tradwife" as a power exchange/kink phenomenon. Also, this bears on the conversation about guilt by association, as well as conversations about the powers and limits of labels, consent, and community (esp. as it relates to kink). I'm not "coming for" tradwives with this, nor accusing them or trying to disparage that lifestyle in any way as such, and I hope that comes through properly. What I'd like to do with this is elevate the discussion around them a bit, help absolve them of unearned guilt where that guilt isn't earned, and use that as a springboard for talking about larger issues. Yes, that italicized text is important and we'll come back to it later.

So, lets have that conversation now.

To start with, here are a few news pieces about the tradwife phenomenon in mainstream media sources:

First, to show you that people have been talking about this well outside of kink/BDSM circles for a while. Second, there have been some recent developments ("rise and fall," "filled with regret" I think demonstrate that aptly). Third, there is some complexity to the label, as exemplified by headlines like "personal pleasure or extreme right ideologies?" or "trad wife meaning controversy." Hence this post, to disambiguate the "tradwife" label, describe what it means, and hopefully get people to put their focus where it is necessary to do so, rather than heaping guilt on undeserving bystanders.

Lets jump to the second part first, and describe what tradwife means. There are, in my opinion, two halves to this. I'll start with the one that anyone reading this is most likely to know.

Tradwife (kink): an aesthetic kink or power exchange relationship revolving around a caricatured view of postwar gender relations, thereby creating a dynamic where submissives &/or wives consensually submit to Dominants &/or husbands while projecting a hyperfeminine affect. The aesthetics of the husband and their emulation of a "trad'sband" are largely unimportant to this as an aesthetic kink. The precise gender of the "wife" in the kink scenario is also often unimportant, with "wife" being a verbal stand-in in this context for "submissive partner" where that partner could be nonbinary or even a man. This latter scenario - or other combinations - is also occasionally combined with kinks like a humiliation fetish, cuckoldry, orgasm control/denial, forced feminization, and others as appropriate to the dynamic in question and individual tastes.

Tradwife (ideology): A far-right, conservative ideology that caricatures and then emulates postwar gender relations, as a vehicle for suggesting that all of society should return to that mythologized time. It posits that such a lifestyle - characterized by hyper-feminine submissive wives in exclusively cis-heteronormative, monogamous (exception: the husbands in such situations are often allowed if not expected to commit adultery), conspicuously Christian relationships with hyper-masculine husbands, using a 1950s era (that is to say, "Mad Men"-esque) vision of such - is the ideal position for all people everywhere, It further posits that any other relationship style or design is inherently inferior, and the cause of numerous societal ills.

In reading through those two definitions, I am sure you can see the overlap. What might be less obvious to some - especially the writers of the above news pieces, who are not familiar with kink culture - are the differences.

The first, BIG difference is consent. Tradwife-as-a-kink requires ongoing consent from all involved parties to be practiced/lived properly. Everyone involved has to want it, or at the very least not be opposed to it, in order for it to work. Tradwife-as-an-ideology does not require this consent, and in fact projects the lifestyle as an ideal upon uninvolved third parties as 'The Way They Should (want to) Live' (tm), thereby discarding entirely the consensual involvement of those third parties in the process. You cannot, EVER, say that a particular lifestyle is "the way people should be" without in the process necessarily ignoring or abrogating their consensual involvement in adopting that lifestyle. Tradwife-as-an-ideology does precisely that, and so it is by definition not an ethical kink practice. Tradwife-as-a-kink does not require that one adopt tradwife-as-an-ideology, however, so it is entirely possible for a person to want to live that lifestyle themselves without wanting to foist it on others and so be performing that aesthetic kink without falling foul of any ethical lines whatsoever. That being said, the overlap exists because some who live that as a kink then come (or have always) to adopt that ideology, or then foist it upon their partners (most commonly in the form of the husbands doing so to their wives, but it's possible to run the other direction as well).

The second difference is not so much one of ethics, as it is of aesthetics. Tradwife-as-an-ideology seems to discourage anything that could be seen as deviant outside of tradwifery itself, and instead encourage an aggressively normative and binarist relationship style, dynamic, and presentation by both participants. That is to say, the men involved are supposed to be Stereotypical Men (tm), the women involved Stereotypical Women (tm), they are supposed to have Stereotypical Sex in a Stereotypical House, a Stereotypical Relationship and the whole thing is designed to live in the Uncanny Valley in Stepford County of Anytown, The South/Midwest, USA c. 1950 (but the 1950s shown in sitcoms not, like, the actual 1950s) where everyone co-exists peacefully and no conflicts arise, ever, because Everyone Knows Their Place. And, crucially, that's as deep as it goes aesthetically. There is no point to that aesthetic other than to ape what is, in their view, an idealized way for all people everywhere to be (one that is conspicuously free of any non-White, non-Christian, non-cishet, or otherwise politically "disagreeable" people whatsoever, but I'm sure that's just a coincidence).

Tradwife-as-a-kink is very different, in that sense, and often (but does not necessarily) involves the inclusion of other kinks into that dynamic such as those named above. Also, it can be (and often is) practiced by non-cishet, non-White people who take that aesthetic and use it to say or do something, as a vehicle to criticize the ideal through caricature even as they live out that caricatured version of it. They add in cuckoldry because of the the implicit assumption that the hyper-sexualized, hyper-masculine Men in that scenario would have to cheat in order to find sexual satisfaction at all, and they want to explore their feelings around that as well as get some kinky satisfaction/jollies from it. They add in forced feminization because they like the idea of being made to be a Stereotypical Woman due to the way society already punishes them for - in all likelihood - not living up to existing gendered expectations they never consented to be held to. But, I also don't want to psychoanalyze this too deeply: they might just add in other kinks because they find them hot, or because they want to. That's okay too, because tradwife-as-a-kink is inherently deviant, and so further deviant lifestyle choices are really no big deal (nor should they be a big deal, when done in a considerate and consensual manner).

So, is it possible to be both? Yes. Obviously.

Is it necessary to be both? No. Equally obviously.

Finally, is tradwife-as-an-ideology a problem while tradwife-as-a-kink is not? I think, by now, you know my answer to that question. I wouldn't have even asked it if I thought my answer was in doubt.

Much like "Your Natural State" I think we as a community need to understand both the kink side of this practice, and its ideological implications. That's not to say we should condemn the kink practice when/where it is conducted properly and with the consent of all parties, but I think we need to understand it in order to put blame and guilt where it is right that it go and not outside of that place.

The people who practice the ideology and not the kink are obviously an issue, and they deserve to be called out for the toxicity they bring to the community. The people who practice the ideology and the kink... well, I think they need to at least be made aware of what they are doing, and given the opportunity to thoughtfully reject the former while they live the latter. We should not paint them with too broad a brush, because honestly we in the hypnokink community know all about the consequences of broad brushes and guilt by association. Credit card companies restrict the use of the word "hypnosis" by adult actors and adult mixed media artists with that same guilt-by-association zeal, assuming that anyone who uses hypnosis for kinky purposes is doing it to evade or elude the consent of their partner. That is not the case, but they do it anyway, and we should not seek to emulate their behavior.

Like I said at the top, labels have power. By adopting and then appropriating that label, right-wing groups and personalities have enabled themselves to abuse their partners, to hide behind the innocent members of their community and use them as a shield, and to evade due criticism for a while. It's time that stop. It won't stop by treating all persons who live that lifestyle as guilty, but rather by focusing guilt where that focus is due - on the people who practice it non-consensually, as an ideology rather than a kink, and to draw a line between the two wherever possible. Some people will straddle that line, and those people should be made to ask themselves the hard question: "which is more important to you?" because the answer to that question will be revelatory, and instructive of what our next steps forward should be in approaching them.

In this game jam, your objective is to create a game where apocalypses of any kind are the main focus. What does that mean?

Well, you could create a game where it's a fallout-style post apocalypse with mutated creatures, or you could create a Waterworld or Wind Waker styled game where climate changed has permanently altered the world, or you could create a game where the apocalypse actually gives humanity hope for a brighter future to learn from the sins of the past. It's up to you!

Your games can be tabletop games OR digital games. Anything that gets your mind in the realm of game design is all that matters to me! 

IMPORTANT: All games made at any point in time are allowed, but it is HIGHLY encouraged to make games only while this game jam is active. This is a chance to exercise your creative skills AND join a game jam, not just one or the other!

It's been a while since I posted :(

I already finished 8 weeks of my 11 week internship at the Belgian federal tax administration. My team works on appeals made by companies about VAT.

In the beginning I worked on old files that were already closed so I could practise. But now I'm working on current files and it feels nice being needed.

I'm so tired though. I've postponed my thesis to august because I feel dead when I get back home in the evening.

I really have to start writing my thesis report though. I've been procrastinating on that as well lol. I need to submit that at the end of may but my mentor needs to read it first because of confidentiality so I should probably finish writing it a week before the deadline.

I have started applying for jobs already! I applied for 2 jobs at tax administration where I'm doing my internship and maybe I get offered a contract when I'm finished. We'll see what happens

RULES FOR SUBMISSIONS (Last updated 18/08/2023)

This one's a given, but the characters you're submitting must be named some variation of Mike or Michael

If a character's full name is Michael, they are eligible for submission. So, Mickey Mouse, whose full name is Michael Theodore Mouse, can be submitted!

No real life Mikes or Michaels are allowed to be submitted. Look, I just don't want Michael Jackson fighting against Michael Distortion, for example.

Also, please don't submit any OCs. I just don't want your Mikes to get demolished by Michaels from massive fandoms, you know?

Please only submit one character at a time. The form should be open for multiple responses, so you're free to submit as many characters separately as you like!

That being said, please don't submit the same character over and over.

Submitting multiple characters from the same piece of media is not only allowed but ENCOURAGED. I'll probably only limit it to 3 Mikes or Michaels per piece of media, but you're still very much encouraged to submit all the Michaels you can think of.

— she stood near the end of the road, looking at sunghoon with a disappointed look. everyone knows that della is his weakness so they sent her last

— sunghoon caved upon seeing the betrayal in her eyes. he even let sooha go to get closer to her

— della almost succeeded, if sooha hadn't appeared behind her and bit her neck. it wasn't out of pure evil, she was just afraid of what might happen if she didn't

— there was a bonus after-credits scene where della woke up in the middle of the same road. she looked around in confusion and felt weak. really weak

— that was until a man showed up on a motorcycle

— he stopped and removed his helmet, getting off to help her

— "are you okay?" he asked in english

— della sat there, staring at him in silence as she felt overwhelming hunger take over her

— she didn't know what it was at that time but she slowly got close to his neck and bit the skin

— her and niki participated in choreographing different parts. his during the pre-chorus and her during the second verse

— della had both a female and male backup dancer. the first chorus was the girl while the second was with the boy

— there are a few times when the guys switch backup dancers but there's only one male. della's partner for the second chorus never changes

— della completely switches sides during the second chorus. she dances as if she was a backup dancer and her partner is a member

— during hee's part [1:24] come to me, make it right, 다시 연결해 줘, 날, della continues and sings 삼켜 널 so his solo with the dancer is a solo with della instead. visual explanation;

— while saying '삼켜 널' or 'devour you', she went close to hee's neck to indicate a bite

— heela's part is the only time when the opposite genders make proper, intentional eye contact

— the k-pop community finally saw how great the group is being co-ed. still making della the one in charge instead of having her submit to a man was genius not me calling myself a genius lmao

— overall, della's popularity was through the roof, and she regained her defenders again. even securing so much more (as mentioned in 'insecurities', she got a lot of hate in late 2022 - early 2023)
